- One or two local places
- 4 miles north of Eastbourne is Polegate
Windmill built in 1817
- The mill replaced a post mill that once stood on the Downs.
- It's open on a regular basis from Easter to end of October
on Sundays and Wednesdays in August. Visitors can climb to the top of this
listed building and view the museum exhibits.
- Fuller details on it's own web site.
- About 13 miles inland is Herstmonceux Castle - built of Flemish
brick in the 15th century, as a gentlemens residence. For many years this
century it was the home of the Astronomer Royal and the Greenwich Mean
Time signal. The castle is now owned by a Canadian Foundation as a study
centre but the grounds are regularly opened for special events.
- The village of Wilmington contains an ancient priory and houses with
thatched roofs but the main attraction is the giant figure carved out on
the hillside. His age and reason for being are speculated upon - but he's
the only one who really knows!
